Research Residencies 2021

About the Process

The Laboratory for Artistic Intelligence is designing and facilitating artistic research over the next two years that will help inform the emergence of Dancemakers in its new framework as a decentralized community-led dance organization.

The Lab specializes in research and development led by artists and artistic methods to frame, practice, model and inform alternatives and new paradigms. Their experience includes:

  • Engaging in real-time with pluralist bodies of knowledge, embodied, translated, formed, transformed and transmitted by people with diverse lived experiences

  • Stewarding equity-seeking groups to form new relationships with(in) colonial institutions.

  • Translating artistic insights and critiques into credible, actionable strategies.

Dancemakers is excited at the prospect of the dance community pursuing self-directed dance research that can simultaneously inform Dancemakers’ organizational research. This process will assist us to learn from and synthesize insights through a wide-range of community inputs and help us better meet the needs of diverse dance-based creators.

The Lab will design research activities as well as witness artistic research led by Resident artists. When and how often the Lab is invited to listen, observe or dialogue with Guest Curators and Resident Artists is up to the Curators and Artists themselves.

More about the Lab's approach and plans will be shared in the coming months following some time to process and form offerings based on the 'data' collected to date. Plans will include opportunities for the community to input, inform, inspire, shape and respond to ideas in open ways.
