Abel Hagos

Curator

As a Street Dance artist and community advocate, my work is rooted in the belief that dance is a powerful tool for expression, storytelling, and cultural preservation. My journey has been shaped by the vibrant, resilient communities I’m honored to be part of, particularly within Toronto’s House and Street Dance scenes. For me, dance is more than personal expression; it’s a way to create spaces where marginalized voices can be seen, heard, and celebrated.

Central to my practice is the concept of play, a vital yet often overlooked aspect of Street Dance. I’m inspired by the spontaneous creativity that emerges when dancers engage with music, space, and each other, pushing their artistry in ways that transcend conventional boundaries. These moments of play are where dancers truly shine.

Through my work, I seek to provide Street Dancers with opportunities to thrive in spaces that honor their artistry. Whether through performances, community events, or curatorial projects, I aim to amplify the voices of dancers who have long been undervalued and challenge the perception that Street Dance is simply entertainment. By centering the creative brilliance of these artists, I hope to shift perceptions and highlight the depth of talent within our community.
